Hey Guys, today I thought I would write about my 5 favourite places to train in Australia. These were hard to choose as I have been to so many incredible places and there is so much variation between each location.
Geelong
Geelong is my number one place to train in the world, not just Australia. There are world-class facilities ranging from the athletics track to the gym where I do my weights and swimming. However, it’s the range of available and safe roads in the region that makes living and training here so great.
Townsville
I have been using Townsville as the base for my annual winter training camp for a few years now and I really love this city. I look forward to getting back there each year. Over the winter Townsville has the perfect climate with the weather seemingly always around the 25 degree mark, which is a nice alternative to the weather down south. You rarely see a cloud, let alone rain, due to the dry season in northern Australia.
Townsville has some great training locations ranging from the very beautiful waterfront to the athletics track, which has stunning views. The roads up there are also a draw card and have improved so much over the past 10 years with large, safe bike lanes on most of our training roads.
Townsville is a small city on the coast but everyone is so friendly and welcoming, just like Geelong. Everything is just a short walk away, with a great supermarket just up the road so we have everything an athlete could ask for during a training camp.
Melbourne
I train in Melbourne most weeks at the incredible Victorian Institute of Sport, which has some of the best facilities in the world. My favourite training route in Melbourne would have the weekend morning sessions along the famous Beach Road where we join thousands of cyclists on their weekend ride. There are hundreds of bunches along this stretch of road so you can always find a nice large group to join for the session.
Falls Creek
Falls Creek has become the location for my annual Summer training camp, which provides the perfect lead into the Summer Down Under International Wheelchair series in Canberra and Sydney at the end of January.
Falls Creek is used as the altitude training base here in Australia during the summer break and each year I am joined by 150-200 runners, numerous triathletes and thousands of cyclists on their training camps in the region. It is amazing to see so many people out each day training on the roads.
Canberra
Canberra is the home of the Australian Institute of Sport and our regular Australian team camps. I have been making the trip up to Canberra for more than 16 years now, so I love this place and the great training that can be done up there. Canberra also has one of the fastest tracks in Australia, along with great late summer conditions, which allows for very fast times.
So that is a list of my 5 favourite training locations in Australia. What do you think? Do you have other training locations that you prefer?
Until next time, keep searching the world for your dream.
