Dream Roll Blog 16 - How do you

Today in this blog I thought I would answer a “How do you………..” Question. Through my motivational speaking to Schools, Clubs and businesses for which I love to share my story and experience from around the world. During my speeches I always like to allow for question time which can be such a fun experience interacting with the crowd answering some far flung questions.

Primary School children have the most imaginative minds which can lead to very interesting questions, I will write about a few of these in another blog.

Todays “How do you” Question is one that is asked a lot really and something I don’t think about which is How Do you Drive? Well just like any other Adult I have my licence and own car just because I am in a wheelchair and can’t use my feet doesn’t mean I am unable to drive. There is always another way to do anything in life and driving a car is no different.

My car is set up with Hand Controls with has two leavers, one is attached to the break and the other is to the accelerator. At the top is a handle which both are connected to. There is a variety of styles in the world but I prefer this type.

So when I open the drivers car door I transfer into the drivers seat from my wheelchair, then pull each wheel of to transfer each into the passengers side of the car before finally lifting my light weight wheelchair onto the spare seat.

To drive I simply have one hand on the steering wheel at all times and one hand on the handle to control the car, to accelerate I simply push the handle down to make the car go and to slow or stop I push the handle towards the dashboard.

I learnt to drive just like any other teenager in Australia and I am totally independent and can go anywhere at anytime with the car helping to create an independent and healthy life while helping me search this world for my Dream Roll.

So there you have it, How do I drive a car. What other questions would you like me to answer in my blog?
