Champ passes on his skills

KIDS at Barwon Valley School have been taking some top sporting tips from champion Geelong athlete Richard Colman this term.

The paralympic gold medallist has been working with the kids as part of the Active Afterschool Communities program – an initiative that provides primary school children with access to free sport and structured physical activity after classes finish for the day.

But Colman said there was more to the sessions than playing sport.

‘‘It’s also about confidence building and communication,’’ he said.

‘‘As an athlete you don’t get to be the coach very often, so to be able to pass on some wisdom is really cool.’’

The Active Afterschool program is also running skateboarding sessions at Clifton Springs Primary and will soon start gymnastics at Portarlington Primary.
